Comvergent provide town centre WiFi to improve customer experience in time for summer footfall surge
As part of their plan to improve facilities within the town, Northampton Borough Council (NBC) wanted to offer free WiFi connectivity to its town centre visitors. NBC realised that by offering such a solution, they could improve the public’s experience, allowing both visitors and traders to communicate, work, share and spend within the town.
A trusted partner
Having worked with Comvergent to successfully introduce a free WiFi solution into their local libraries, NBC once again called upon the telecoms services specialists for this project.
With the busy summertime around the corner, NBC were keen to offer connectivity to their visitors as soon as possible to ensure the service was
available during this popular time of year.
With an office in Northamptonshire themselves, Comvergent were able to commit to an extremely rapid turn-around time, meeting both NBC’s deadline and, equally importantly, their budget expectations.
Work gets underway
Comvergent offered a turnkey solution which included:
- Initial consultation to gather requirements (project schedule
- Design the solution and source equipment and expert service partners
- Site surveys to ensure the suitability of proposed locations and to support the installation of the selected WiFi Access Points (AP) and backhaul links.
- Rapid expert installation of network, consisting of 16 Outdoor APs connected in clusters which then connect to 4 x Point to Multi-point Infinet 5Ghz radio links.
- Following successful installation, the team carried out testing to ensure optimised experience.
As a result of Comvergent providing this end-to-end solution, NBC were able to offer a free WiFi service to all members of the public visiting the town centre, including an NBC splash page which provides valuable advertising space for NBC and local businesses.
Rapid realisation of benefits
In meeting NBC’s short deadline, Comvergent delivered the solution from start to finish in just eight weeks, thus allowing NBC to rapidly turn their vision for a connected town centre into reality.
Implementing free WiFi at street level has given both visitors and traders alike a better overall experience when spending time in Northampton town centre. By replicating the sort of wireless connectivity service the general public has come to expect as the norm, particularly in big in-door centres such as The Centre MK, this could encourage potential shoppers to spend more time in the town centre rather than travelling to the bigger regional in-door centres.
The Ruckus Zone Director Monitoring and Management application located at the NBC council offices allows Comvergent remote access for monitoring and management of all the APs. This enables them to provide a proactive monitoring and maintenance service, thus enhancing the public’s user experience by keeping service disruptions down to a minimum.
